Pie And Prejudice

by Teresa Jennings and Karl HitzemannA Most Agreeable Holiday Musical For Young Voices
It is a truth universally acknowledged that elves make excellent pies. Ah! But which elves and which pies are the most excellent? Is it Elizabeth's mince? Elinor's apple? Lady Ice de Berg's pumpkin? It's too overwhelming for mere palates to choose! (Besides, the reindeer always pick the fern pie.) Only the discerning good opinions of the judges (Kringley, Jingley, Bingley, and Darcy) at the Northpolarland Pie Festival can determine the answer. Or can they? Tensions mount as rivalries and yes, prejudice, infiltrate what should be a sweet event. Not even the very merry and musical host, Pie Piper, can prevent things from becoming crusty. When alas, the judges are unable to break a tie (gasp!), steps must be taken to prevent disaster. Only the considerable good heart of Father Christmas can set things right. Called upon for his sense and sensibility, he is asked to break the pie tie, which of course, he does with fairness and good taste, naming The Kindness Pie made by young Emma as the winner. Even those who seemed previously irredeemable are won over by the excellent pie made with kindness and love.
This most agreeable, albeit silly, holiday musical for young voices is a deliberate homage to well-known and beloved author, Jane Austen, whose 250th birthday we celebrate in December 2025. Set in an imaginary place quite a bit north of olde England roundabout the late 1700s or early 1800s, the musical features a cast of mostly elves with a few optional celebrities/cameos. While the overall message of the musical is kindness, it is often accompanied by humor. And pie. Lots of pie. Also, given the era of Miss Austen, we've taken the liberty of borrowing musical moments from her contemporaries, Mozart and Beethoven, not to mention a few obvious nods to England. Eat pie and carry on!
Approximately 20-30 minutes long, the musical includes a script with easy-to-learn lines, plus five original songs: "At The Festival," "Promenade Of Pies," "Whatever Shall We Do?," "A Pie Of Kindness," and "It's Easy As Pie."
