I find Boomwhackers® to be extremely motivational for students. I say anything that gets students interested and focused on making music is a plus. Of course, Boomwhackers® come with their own set of "rules" - if you abuse the instruments, you don't play. My students perform better while looking at charts I make that I place on the board, rather than trying to read music at this point.
