STANDARD 1 - CREATING, PERFORMING, AND PARTICIPATING IN THE ARTS

Students will actively engage in the processes that constitute creation and performance in the arts (dance, music, theater, and visual arts) and participate in various roles in the arts.

STANDARD 2 - KNOWING AND USING ARTS MATERIALS AND RESOURCES

Students will be knowledgeable about and make use of the materials and resources available for participation in the arts in various roles.

Goal: Students will be able to play the C Major scale on the recorder.
Objectives:
1. The students will be able to correctly recognize and apply recorder notation.
2. Students will be able to read and play music notes on the recorder.
Materials: Recorder, Major Scale Worksheet
Procedure:
1. Hand out recorders and instruct the students to have the recorders in ready position. (1-2 minutes)
2. Play X and O game which corresponds to holes on the recorder. Have students individually try to finger the recorder with symbols written on the board. When they finger correctly, have them try to blow the note. (5-7 minutes)
3. Review solfège hand signals. (1 minute)
4. Review note letter names. (1-2 minutes)
5. Have students put the recorders in ready position and hand out worksheets. (1-2 minutes)
6. As a class, have the students play their recorder using solfège cues, note name cues, and finally music notation cues. (5-7 minutes)
7. As a group, have the students play the C Major scale outlined on the worksheet. (2-3 minutes)
Evaluation:
1. The students were able to correctly recognize and apply recorder notation.
2. Students were able to read and play music notes on the recorder.
Homework: Students will practice playing the C Major scale going upwards.
