Talk to your principal. In our school we have no "support staff" classes
(that's music, phy ed, speech, Title programs, special ed, counselor,
etc.) after 2:00 pm. This is the afternoon recess time for those who use
it. Our school dismisses at 3:15. I had to talk a little to get this for
all of us. The staff wanted phy ed and music, but didn't think it fair
for the other special students to miss the party, and tried sending the
kids after the party. NO WAY - I'm not beating my head against the wall
after the classroom teachers have let the students be out of control for
an hour!!! No parties will start before 2:00!!! Of course, the classroom
people want a break, so sometimes they get together with other rooms of
the same grade and show a video, and take turns supervising the mob. It
may be difficult to make the change, but once you do, everybody will
adjust. (sometimes the phy ed teacher will combine classes earlier in
the day to accommodate the classroom teachers, but I never do - I don't
have the room to do that!
