Martha,

I have used parts of Essential Elements, but my standby is Mel Bay's
Mastering Guitar - short course version. I teach intro to guitar to
7th and 8th graders 4 days a week for one quarter each year and this
is the easiest one that covers easy chords, tablature and picking
melodies all in one book. If you are going to have the class all year,
other methods probably would work just as well. If you are working
with older students EE is probably more at their level. I took the
Teaching Guitar course through MENC and I have a stack of sample
methods at school. I'll compile a list and send it to you tomorrow if
possible.
