Sarah,
I subscribe to Music Express! besides MK-8, and
use both to augment my SB World of Music textbooks.
Because they provide the year's Scope and Sequence in
advance, and write out the correlating National Music
Standards for each lesson, I can easily plan its use
in my curriculum and thus I can use
Textbook/Curriculum Monies for the subscription and
not have it come out of my classroom account. I have
used ME with all levels, K-8. I like the fact that
choreography is already there, and I love Christy's
columns and Orff arrangments, although those are more
for the younger set.
I recall the year before last, the issues seemed a
bit lean on interest-bearing selections for the sixth
graders, but the year before that and last year and
this year they have loved it.
This year, my sixth graders have really gotten
into the current issue's Drum Line article, rhythms,
and spun off to create their own drum line patterns,
and they - including the BOYS- also love the
Mexican-flavored song Quiero Bailar with its
"flamenco"-inspired choreography. They always enjoy
the artist interviews on the CD and in the article in
each issue.
I don't always use everything in each issue each
year. I pick and choose, sometimes using something
from past issues in the current year - the same as I
do with MK-8. I do not let the kids keep the
magazines, however; I keep them stored in their
original boxes for use each year as needed.
