We do the same as Lori with music on for 5 minutes and then no music for 5
minutes. When the music is on, they have to be quiet (I always slipped in
some music I wanted them to learn!)
Worked good. You can download 5 minutes of silence to make your cd of
lunchroom music.

Musical ensembles are one of the few places where students learn and
practice the 21st Century Skills of collaboration, creative
problem-solving, self-reliance, use of higher-order thinking, how to be
empathetic, encouraging, accountable to their peers, and above all...the
thrill of musical performance and joy of making and sharing music.
