I also had this thought this week! There are so many routines I've
perfected over years that just got thrown out the window!
Here's what I workshopped after my first day:
I have a variety of speakers on my cart for backup reasons initially, but
they help in this situation: my battery powered CD player with an aux port,
and also my rechargeable bluetooth speaker which has an aux port as well
(just in case), so I can plug my phone into either of these and play an
instrumental steady beat selection for them to tap the beat while I roll in
and get set up. This is how I had started my 4k/5k/1st classes the last 2
years when they came to me, so it was an easy transition for 5k/1st/2nd
because they're already trained.
3rd, 4th,and 5th this week I let them tell me about their summers, raising
hands and taking turns until I was set up. In the future, I can see them
getting their iPads out and completing a quick preassessment or warm up
activity on SeeSaw, knowing they only have until I'm done getting set up to
finish. They could also play some rhythm poison, my older ones are ready to
lead it themselves.
I also got myself a personal mic, so no matter where I am in the room I can
be heard, which is great when your head is under a desk plugging in!
Of course, these are very specific to my situation but they may work for
you! I might use these as well when I take them outside just to transition
them. I have been rallying for an outdoor classroom where I stay and they
come to me but that made my principals' heads spin right now so it'll have
to wait. We're fortunate to have LOTS of outdoor spaces at both my schools
for getting literal fresh air!
