I’m 4 days from my 5th grade revue. (Doing "My Planet, Your Planet", one of my MK8 favorites.) Every year to mark the special event of their last performance at elementary school, we order t-shirts for the show. Every year I have a few parents that either forget or can't afford one, and it's tradition that I order (and pay for) those to make sure that no one gets left out. It's usually five or so, not a huge deal. This year it was 12, and my cost was over $100, so I sent handwritten notes home explaining that I ordered their child a shirt because I wanted to avoid disappointment on concert day, and I'd appreciate reimbursement. A few have ignored me; a couple apologized for missing the deadline; and two have been so angry that I purchased a shirt that they've written angry emails and note cards because I hadn't called them to find out if their child was planning on participating.
Excuse me? I've sent no less than 3 emails and paper copies home with information about this show, each one with the sentence "If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at..." In the 28 years I've taught, the responsibility has always been with the parent to contact the teacher if there's a problem or a conflict.
Am I getting old? Is this a generational expectation with Millenials? Has anyone else run into this?
