Don,
I am in NC as well. I was a reviewer for ASW last summer, and the biggest
issue I saw was not matching the artifact to the verb in the objective. The
biggest verb I personally had trouble with in reviewing was the interpret
verb. I wanted to hear musical examples for interpret.

So for your 1st grade, as a reviewed, I'd like to see a video or hear an
audio recording of them reading rhythms, and an accompanying list of what
they are reading if it's not a video. I am doing the similar objective from
kindergarten, and 2 weeks ago, I introduced notation after 6 months of
echoing rhythms, and recorded them reading 8 Ta & Ti-ti patterns. At this
stage they need me to point to them as I'm leading them through. In
mid-May, I'll do it again with Ta, Ti-ti and Rest, and I'll count them off
and they'll read on their own with a steady beat.

I've never liked the 3rd grade instrument objective. 2nd and 4th are pretty
clear on what they are to have in them (2nd-identify how an instrument makes
its sound, 4th-classify into brass, woodwinds, strings and percussion). It
seems obvious to me that it was different groups writing each grade level.
I did a little bit with trying to collect for this objective a couple of
years ago (then decided not to try and collect for this one die to the
vagueness and what I felt that this should have been 4th grades objective
and 4th grades classify being the 3rd grade one). I had a sheet with
choices where I played a single instrument/voice and I did a section where I
played a song or piece of music and had them indentify the sounds they
heard. If I was you and hadn't finalized your objective selections, I
might look at a different objective. The other 3rd Musical Response
objectives are not the friendliest to capturing growth artifacts.

Feel free to contact me personally at euph78@gmail.com if you have any more
questions or want to discuss this more.

Subject: [MK8] Questions concerning ASW (Analysis of Student Work) for
teachers in NC

Good morning,

Many of you remember different teachers asking about this when it was
instituted in NC. It is a way for us to be evaluated. Today, I would like
some opinions on the best way to accomplish two different objectives with
two different grades.

I have to decide a way to accomplish the following two objectives.

For the First Grade, the objective is AE.M.1.ML.2.1 Interpret rhythm
patterns that are iconic or standard notation for quarter notes, quarter
rests, and beamed eighth notes.

For third grade, the objective is AE.M.3.MR.1.4 Identify the sounds of a
variety of instruments and voices, including many orchestral instruments
from various cultures, children's voices, and male and female adult voices.

These in theory can be paper and pencil or video clips.

Any suggestions?

Thanks so much,
