My colleagues and I had an in-school 9-11 program that was very
well-received. We re-vamped it slightly and did it again for a Veteran's
Day program at night - and attendance was dismal. The America the Beautiful
paper plate routine wasn't very impressive with only 12 students, vs the
100 we had at the daytime performance.

This is a fine arts magnet school - why would you send your kids here if you
didn't want to see them occasionally perform? So... poor attendance is
universal, it seems.

I've posted before about a young man I taught years ago who had a "special"
part on the xylophone & didn't show up for the Christmas program. Two years
later as I cried while reading the story of his arrest, all I could think
about was how his mom didn't even care enough to bring him to his program.
He was with a group of boys who robbed a convenience store & killed the
owner - he was sentenced to life in prison. He was 13 and in the 6th grade
when he was arrested.
