Veterans' March

by Teresa Jennings

Gratitude is a sentiment that never gets old, especially when it comes to our veterans. This simple, happy march allows your students to show their appreciation on Veterans Day or any time you find it appropriate. It's easy to sing and easy to learn and repetitious enough for even your young ones to join in.

The boisterous melody and marching band accompaniment invite movement, which you can use modestly or aggressively, as you choose. At the least, you could have students march in place during the first strain (measure 17). Perhaps a select group of students can march around a predetermined area, including into the audience and/or up to your veteran guests of honor.

Be sure to have an American flag on display somewhere visible. One big one is nice, but you could also let your kids hold small ones as they sing and march.
