Opus 2 For Boomwhackers & Friends

by Teresa Jennings

Second in a series (yet to be created), this catchy rock tune is a feature specifically written for Boomwhackers® (BW) and includes two different parts for them. BW 1 is the easier part and uses only the notes D and A. BW 2 is a little more challenging and uses C, D, E, F, G, A, B, and C'. It also has some doubled notes, so players will need to focus. But neither has anything more difficult rhythmically than a quarter note.

There are several other parts (the "Friends" alluded to in the title), all of which are optional, but add a lot if you can use them. These include body percussion – patsches (thigh slaps), heel stomps, and claps. They also include rhythm sticks, hand drums, and cowbells. You can substitute other instruments for any of these. The BW part is doubled in the orchestration on the recording and it, too, could be played on other instruments such as marimba, xylophone, or even bells. For ease of use and duplication, you will find extracted parts for the players on our web site.

While we are very fond of our recording, especially the cool jazzy trumpets with harmon mutes, this accompaniment is super simple and could be played live on a piano or other keyboard. If you do that, you could make it faster or slower and even change the form. If you do use the recording however, be sure players listen to the 4 taps prior to the first measure so that they come in right on beat 1 of the first bar.
