The Birth Of Spring

by Mike Wilson

"The Birth Of Spring" is a serious, 3-part choral piece for your older choirs. Part 3 is written in an upper tenor range for your lower, changing, and changed voices. Part 1 stands on its own if you prefer a unison version for smaller or younger choirs.

An acoustic guitar introduces the motif and the voices enter in a soft "hooty" style. A more legit choral sound is appropriate – rounder, taller vowels and the like. The high violins lend to the "mysterious" feel up to measure 15 when they break into parts and the song opens up. Parts 2 and 3 (which are optional) come into action on verse two, echoing the lyrics with their own melody lines. We've provided part-specific mixes on our web site so you can hear them individually. (See details on page 63.)

Dynamics play an important role, especially during the bridge and more notably the somewhat sudden crescendos in measures 22 and 49. You will also want to make sure there is a definite contrast when it comes down at the D.S. then breaking into measure 15 for the last time.
