PRODUCTION:

Listen to the Angels can be staged simply with no set or props, OR with a variety of props, costumes and sets.

STAGING:

The stage should be divided between "Heaven" and "Earth". The angels cross over to the Earth side of the stage in some scenes. This can be suggested through set decorations (suspended "clouds" and/or a painted starry backdrop for "Heaven"; and earth tones and a manger for "Earth"), or no set pieces at all. Simply moving the children from one side of the stage to another during the musical, as the dialog dictates where they are, will clearly paint the picture.

COSTUMES:

For the angels, costumes can be simple or more detailed, depending on your preferences. The traditional angel costume, for example, could involve wings made out of cardboard and foil, or white net-covered wire. You may want to make a halo out of silver decorative wire found at most craft stores.

Another option is to have white tee shirts with iron-on transfer letters with the names of each angel or number on the front.

Different angels can have props that accompany their individual personalities. For example, Angel #1 is a "brainy" angel. He/she could wear glasses and perhaps a pocket protector filled with pens and pencils. Jake is a "cool" angel and could wear sunglasses and anything else that could distinguish him or her from the other angels. Sherman could be a little younger than the others to enhance this curious, novice like character. Gabriel could wear something that distinguishes him as the leader, like a hat, a badge, or a different set of wings, halo or shirt. If you combine or multiply the numbered angel parts, disregard the costuming suggestions for those particular angels.

For Mary, Joseph and the Shepherds, dress in costumes consistent with those from this Biblical period.

CASTING OPTIONS:

The Voice 1 and 2 parts can be performed one of several ways:

  • Seen onstage or unseen offstage
  • Performed by additional speakers
  • Performed by adults
  • Performed by children already cast in a designated angel part

Names for the angels can be substituted depending on the gender of your lead players. Gabriel, for example, could be Gabriella. Sherman could be Shirley. The part of Jake could be played by a girl. She could be called Valley and might use a "valley girl" inflection with the lines. Some lines could be combined if you have less than six children who can perform speaking roles.

Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds are non-speaking roles. You may have as many or as few shepherds as you wish.

CAST:

  • VOICES 1 & 2 (See Casting Options on the previous page)
  • ANGELS 1, 2 & 3 (May be combined or separated; boys and/or girls)
  • GABRIEL: "Lead" Angel. (girl or boy; See female substitute name under Casting Options)
  • JAKE: "Cool" Angel (girl or boy; See female substitute name under Casting Options)
  • SHERMAN: Eager and curious (girl or boy; See female substitute name under Casting Options)
  • MARY, JOSEPH and SHEPHERDS: Non-speaking roles

By combining a few roles, this musical can easily be performed with as few as 10 children.
