I am so grateful you posted this activity. It reminds me of something I'v=
e
een wanting to do this year and forgot.
Let's analyze it a bit.
This activity is in Bloom's Taxonomy under "analysis." It requires that=
you
ook at the PARTS of something, which is my kid-friendly definition of
nalysis. Therefore, it is considered higher order thinking which is alway=

good thing for kids to do. They have to really dig to get the answers an=

t's FUN.
It's also vastly enjoyable to watch kids come up with answers to question=
s
hat seemingly come out of the air ----
ow are the princes in Into The Woods alike and different?
hat are the similarities between a moose and an airplane?
ow are the three pigs like the three bears?
ow are a cupcake and a hamburger alike?
ow are a clarinet and a tuba alike?
Don't forget to put the "how are they alike" in there as well. Compare an=

ontrast are not all about the differences.
Real mind stretchers.
Then if you like that and want to expand it more, have them give their
nswers in 1) rhyming couplets which they also could sing or not or 2)
ovement/mime (physical representation) or 3) quick sketches on the board=
..
Gotta go make a lesson plan now!

Although I haven't tried it yet, I'm considering a new game that would
likely just be called "What's the Difference?" or just "What's the Diff?=

(although maybe our younger grades wouldn't get that anymore?)
The class could be divided into two groups, one from each group taking a
turn at a time, or just a whole class review...whatever might work for yo=

situation or age level. Think a variation on "Family Feud."

What's the difference between a recital and a concert?
What's the difference between a play and a musical?
What's the difference between a bass clef and a string bass?
What's the difference between a trumpet and a trombone?
...............between a quarter note and a half note?
...............between a soprano and an alto?
...............between a guitar and a violin?
...............between staccato and legato?
...............between a steady beat and a rhythm?

And maybe.....if I really tried......I'd have a powerpoint slide
ready to visualize each answer to some degree........maybe a summer
project.........
