I really enjoy this lesson, and it's lots of work for the kids (and not so much for me!). It uses scarves and the song "Viennese Musical Clock". I do it with 2nd and up in a 50-minute lesson.

*Listen to this song. Raise your hand when you think the music makes a BIG change.

*All music has patterns. We label musical patterns with letters A, B, C, and so forth.

*Listen again and tell me when the music changes its pattern. We will of course begin with A. (Write pattern on board as the students direct you. Correct any mistakes at the end of the song.)

*Get in groups (however you do this in your class, but I HIGHLY suggest no more than 5 kids in each group and NOT letting them choose their own group. I usually pass out scarves first and then say "purples, get in a group; blues, get in a group", etc.)

*Your job is to do a movement that shows each part of the pattern. (Lots of discussion here about how each A section has to be alike, and all the students in the group have to do exactly the same movement, you must stay with your group and not move around, etc.) This first time is "brainstorming". Be creative but follow the rules. You're just thinking and practicing ways to move to the music.

*(After the first practice) Okay, now you have 4 minutes to talk to each other about which movements worked well. (This is where some disagreement usually occurs; I tell them to work it out in their group.)

*Before we practice again, show me the move that you are doing for the A section; the B section (and so forth).

*Here's the music! Practice with your group.

*Do we need to fix any last-minute problems? You have 2 minutes to discuss that.

*Now we will perform our routine for the other groups in the class! (Instant frantic groans -- "no no no!" but they end up enjoying it.)

Hi y'all. I am stumped as to what to teach for my in depth formal evaluation for 3rd grade. I JUST lost Quaver and have no books. I have a teacher's book and cd from SHare the Music 98.... sigh. Any brilliant suggestions? In the past I taught Rocky Mountain pitch syllables (and every possible other thing about it---they require so much) and I have also done rhythm. I don't know if I have the same principal as before but I think I am getting the SUPER tough one. I need to do something in groups (maybe an ostinato on the 2 xylophones and 2 glocks I have, taking turns?) Maybe something with form? I only have a couple of weeks to get this done! grrrr Thanks so much for any suggestions : )
