Here's one idea for teaching meter: Sing and play a song in 2/4 then in 6/8, adapting rhythms.
Example: Horsey, Horsey on your way, we've been together for many a day. / With your tail swish and the wheels go round, Giddyup, we're homeward bound.
Have them trot (2/4), then gallop (6/8).
