Why not use ball caps worn backwards, and staple the animal zoo plates to them? Each child becomes a puppet, and mouths are clear for singing!

I often use backwards ball caps for costumes: add ears and eyes to make dogs or cats; wear black ones frontwards and staple orange beak on bill of cap and large eyes above it for penguins. I have also used off-white backwards caps for the base to make colonial wigs with cotton batting (more permanent).
