As a teacher who just finished my first year (I started in Jan. of 2001), I would say let your student teacher begin teaching as early as possible. My first day I had 30 some woodwinds in beginning band, all by myself! My cooperating teacher was next door, with brass and woodwinds (the rooms connected, so I wasn't really alone...). It was scary at first, but after that, nothing else was quite as scary!
