Here's a solution for chromatic glockenspiels with non-removable bars. If you'd like to use them in C pentatonic, cut up some refrigerator magnets and use them to cover the Fs and Bs. On my instruments, the magnets stick, and they mute the sound of the bars without damaging the instrument. You just have to remind the kids not to move them!
