I have students who tend to want to "choose" their rhythm instruments when we play in class. I came up with a solution that I think is fair. I wrote on popsicle sticks the names of the rhythm instruments in my music room. Students choose a popsicle stick from a tall cup that conceals the instrument name, then they can go and choose that instrument. It has worked really well - and I can choose which sticks to put in the cup if I'm not using all of them for a particular activity.
