I'm using the idea for Recorder Karate, and I just know it's going to be great! I have a 4th and 5th grade "club" setting that I'm using it for, and I just introduced it today.
Our counselor's husband has a karate school, so I told her about the idea, and she got real excited! She had a couple more suggestions for me, such as an "oath" at the beginning and end of class. (I wrote a couple sentences and called it a "pledge" instead!) She also said that she thought that I needed a belt, so I went to Wal-Mart, bought some black fabric, and made myself a belt, complete with two gold stripes and one silver stripe! (That makes me a Third Degree Black Belt in recorder!!!) So, I wore it when the students came into the room today and as I explained what we were going to be doing. They thought the whole thing was pretty cool.
Next week, they will get their recorders and we will begin. What a great incentive to practice, working toward the next level and color. Thanks for the great idea!
