Put some rhythmic music on and have the kids play whatever they want. Quickly change the sign to "stop," and the last one to stop is out; then turn to "go," and they start again. The kids love it, and they start to pay attention as they don't want to be the last one and have to put their instrument down! I do this in the fall when I first introduce drums to kinders and first graders. Then I have the children who were the winners in that lesson be the person holding the sign for the next lesson.
