To teach students breath control and to use the correct amount of air when playing a recorder, I have them put up their index finger and pretend it's a lit candle. I tell them to blow on the candle lightly enough so that the "flame" flickers but doesn't go out. I then have them separate the puffs of air using their tongue to practice tonguing.
