One thing I like to do is have those students who are old enough sign-in. Teachers always give me a class list, but you can tell a lot about a child by the way they sign their name. Some kids are very neat, some extremely sloppy, some write big, some write small, some can't spell their first or last name, etc. It really gives you insight into that child's development.
