Swimmin'

by Teresa & Paul Jennings

Summertime, and the livin' can be... wet! One of the pure joys of warm weather is the opportunity to go swimming outside. Whether it's a beach, a pool, a pond, a lake, a water park, or even just an inflatable backyard donut, swimming is just plain fun to do. You don't have to think too deeply to use this very lighthearted salute to the watery activity. Simply perform it as is within any seasonal program that includes outdoor activities, or even one that zeroes in on aquatic events specifically.

All unison, it's really very easy to pick up, and the addition of the stylized long scoops make it all the more memorable. The swinging jazz band on the recording also helps with the easygoing, smile-provoking nature.

Obviously, if you do use this song in a performance, costuming would be easy to add. Though we do suggest keeping swimsuits modest if you use them. Coverups, shorts, beach towels, etc., would be appropriate. Add some sunglasses, swim fins, goggles, and snorkels as well.

For active visual interest, a simple "swim stroke" with arms every time the word "swimmin' " is sung could add a little something extra. By the end of the song, your audience might just be swimmin' along, too!
