Best Friends Forever

by Teresa Jennings

You've probably heard your students talking about their BFF (best friends forever). So we thought they might enjoy having a song to sing about them. Plus, can you ever really have too many friendship songs at the ready for Valentine's Day? We think not.

This one is a spirited Latin piece, full of guitars and percussion and a flute duet to give it a little spice. The melody probably looks more intimidating on paper than it sounds. As usual, we suggest your students listen to our singers a couple of times to get the hang of it.

At measure 19, there is some optional movement you may decide to use. It's basic and repetitive so that it can be learned quickly. But you might wish to make it even simpler, so it's more accessible for some. Or only use it with a group of dancers while others sing. It could continue at the D.C. and even further if you like.

One tip with this song: We told our singers not to enunciate too well, believe it or not. Words like "best" sound more like "bess." That makes it flow more readily, allowing the kids to stay with the beat more comfortably. Because, despite its tempo, it has a bit of a relaxed feel.
