A Turkey Followed Me Home

by John Riggio

What do you do when a turkey follows you home and it's the week of Thanksgiving!? This silly song explores that scenario in a lively country style. The vocal line is fairly simple, mostly eighth notes and a bit of syncopation at the coda. Where your students will really have fun is with the spoken parts. What does a sad gobble sound like? An alarmed gobble? A panicked gobble? You'll have to audition your actors to find out! There are also a couple of narrative lines, plus some character lines, like the kid who says, "Shoo! Go on! Git!" Our studio singers enjoyed performing these, so we feel confident yours will, too.

If you end up performing this song on stage, there are a number of visual aides you can use, like a kid in a turkey outfit, a "kitchen" where Thanksgiving dinner is being prepared, and of course, actors to make the song come alive. Have your "hero" try to hide the turkey in various places - cover him with laundry, run away from the kitchen, that sort of thing. When you get to the panicked gobble during the coda, have your turkey scamper out the door and run off stage. Let your other performers join in the gobbling for extra fun. Cut them off when you've had enough. Happy Thanksgiving!
