Sweet Water

by Teresa Jennings

This light, folk-style round is based on the whole tone scale. (Discuss this scale with your students. Relate it to the "black keys on the piano.") On the recording, you will hear the sounds of birds and gently flowing water, which continue for the duration of the song, lending a serene quality and setting the tone for the singing. Two acoustic guitars and a mandolin are used for the continuing treble line. Another instrument we used is piano, but you could add autoharp to the blend.

Note: This song was originally published in Vol. 5, No. 4. It is one of our occasional "Flashback" pieces, which we hope will remind subscribers of the great stuff from years past.
