Agents Of Change

by Teresa Jennings

When used as the defining moment of your revue, "Agents Of Change" is the perfect finale. Though the lyrics do not specifically mention the topic of the revue, which means you could certainly use it in other venues, it does indeed inspire in this one. Part marching band, part rock band, it is extremely motivational and should be performed that way. Turn the volume way up so the kids can hear the driving beat. Tell them to belt with enthusiasm and conviction, and you'll bring down the house. Add the optional claps, and the action will further infuse excitement into their performance. Definitely play the recording of our singers for yours to inspire them.

The song is deliberately kept simple (unison) and repetitive so that everyone can participate. At the end of the song, the students are encouraged to invite the audience to join them when they sing the lyrics, "Hey! You! On your feet!," etc. At the very least, get them on their feet! Have singers gesture accordingly, sending a few out into the audience to "help" some stand up and clap. In fact, the chorus at measure 32 is so easy and memorable, your audience might be able to join in the second time there as well, having only heard it once before. Keep in mind that these sorts of things all work better if the music is nice and loud. Then everyone can get carried away!

If you'd like to add some movement, it would certainly be easy enough to do. After all, the tune is a march. Let all or some of your performers march around the performance area, or in place, alternating when and where they stop and start. Emphasizing the opening "cheers" by marching is one possibility for this sort of movement, as is the ending. Just be sure to rehearse who marches and what path(s) they will take ahead of time.
