Whacky, Whacky West

by Karl Hitzemann

You just can't think about the "Old West" without being reminded of Boomwhackers®. Well, maybe you can. But with "Whacky, Whacky West" you'll definitely see how much fun it is when the two come together. It features a nifty cowboy sound complete with banjo, harmonica, guitar, and piano. Okay, so there probably wouldn't have been a piano out on the open range, but we're pretty sure there weren't Boomwhackers® either, so we took a few liberties.

The singers are featured the first time through the song. You could have your Boomwhacker® players moseying around during this verse. Make sure they're ready, though, by the first ending because they play the melody during the repeat, while the singers sing the melody on an "ooh." This gives the Boomwhacker® players a chance to be in the spotlight.

Some of your students will probably jump at the chance to dress up like cowboys and cowgirls (cowboy hats, boots, jeans, vests, chaps, and the like). There is also plenty of opportunity for some fun cowboy pantomime. Like sitting around the campfire, riding a horse, lassoing a cow, playing a banjo or harmonica, etc. To add to the whole mix, we added temple blocks throughout the song to give it the "clip, clop" sound of horse hooves. You'll also hear a horse, some cattle, and a coyote at various times during the repeat.
