Santa Claus Is On His Way

by Teresa Jennings

We dare you to hear this song and not go around singing it! It's very catchy, very easy, and just way too fun. What's more, it gives you a chance to showcase lots of students performing as singers, percussionists, mallet players, and Boomwhacker® players. (All optional, of course.)

The lyrics are very punchy through the verse, only occurring during the first half of each measure, give or take. The chorus (measure 25) is super simple and memorable and breaks up the sections of the tune nicely. Since there are so many lyrics to learn in the verses (even if they are short and punchy), you might want to just have students repeat the first verse the second time.

Though there are claps indicated on the music, we did not record them on the CD. You can add them if you like, and they will probably add to the movement and energy of the piece. For the recording, we just wanted to be sure that the percussion and Boomwhackers® were more heard. There is no printed percussion part due to the simplicity of what they play. During the verse, they play two quarter notes on beats 3 and 4 of every measure. During the chorus, they play four quarter notes in every bar. Indications to stop and start percussion are on the music. We recommend any non-pitched percussion instrument, but we used jingle bells, rhythm sticks, hand drums, and cowbells.

The Boomwhackers®/mallets part is indicated on the music. There is also an extracted part for this included with the reproducible Student Parts (which are available separately - call us or visit our web site for details). The part is super simple during the verse, just following the root movement of the chords. During the chorus, the part actually breaks into chords, but you can just have players continue to play the roots for an easier version. (Since this tune is not a Boomwhacker® "feature," we did not include Boomwhacker® applause afterwards. But you can.)
