Summer Sounds

by Teresa Jennings

There are no rules when putting this fun piece together. Basically, there are 4 rhythm/percussion parts and 6 vocal parts which can be selectively used or not used depending on what you want. The idea is to start one of the the lines and four bars later add another, and four bars later, another, etc., until you have added all you wish to. There is a suggested form for performance on page 30, which we used on the P/A Cassette. Here are some variations you might want to try:

  • A cappella (any form)
  • Voices and piano only (any form)
  • Voices, piano, body percussion only (any form)
  • All parts - start with one rhythm at a time, add one vocal part at a time in any order you choose. Build till all are in then unbuild till all are out.
  • Build as before, but alternate the rhythm and voices. Unbuild or end with all parts in.
  • Build voices only. Add rhythm break, then unbuild with or without rhythm added.
  • Use solfege syllables instead of the "lyrics."Assign a leader to give cues for entrances and exits of parts for smoothest performance.

If you'd like to add Orff keyboard instruments to the piano line, transpose to the key of C.

However you end it, end it on beat one.

Make sure your kids exaggerate the vocal sounds. This is no time to be dignified!
