Summertime Rocks

by Teresa Jennings

It couldn't get any simpler than this halftime rock song. Focusing mostly on the rhythm section (electric guitars, basses and drums), the song allows your students to either sing the lyrics as written or come up with their own sounds, melodies, lyrics, and so on. The two parts are basic and let even your older boys feel like they are participating with nonsense syllables and easy rhythms and melodies.

The song is meant to be used with the recording only, and includes a bass solo, a drum solo and a guitar solo, as well as many unique layers and sounds of synthesizers that come and go. Your students may wish to listen to the instrumental only version to hear all the cool things going on before they attempt to add their own personal touches. By all means, allow them to improvise (D dorian) on any instrument or vocally.

As far as movement is concerned, we are betting they will be adding their own long before you bring up the subject. As all kids know, summertime rocks!
