The Sounds Of The Night

by Teresa Jennings

This simple rock song is designed as both an exercise in rhythm and an opportunity to use body percussion.(It's also a way to use something a wee bit "scary" for those schools that aren't allowed to use anything that refers to Halloween, which this song absolutely does not, despite the nocturnal reference.)

Let your students listen to the recording and they will pick it up very quickly. They will also probably enjoy the instrumental tracks, which include pipe organ and strings.

Feel free to let them come up with their own body percussion in lieu of the suggested stomping, clapping, etc. The idea is to first introduce four different sounds, two bars at a time, then build on them cumulatively. This is good training for keeping parts on track while others are also being performed.

It's also just a lot of fun!
