Everyone Has Something They Can Do

by Teresa Jennings

Having introduced the revue, your youngest students get the chance to remind everyone that "Everyone Has Something They Can Do." This gentle song is deliberately slower so that your little ones can perform the sign language, which we have included on page 22.

Though the song is simple and unison, you could probably get more emotional response out of it by selecting soloists to do various parts of the song. Or by choosing a few students to perform the sign language in front of the rest of the group.

The version of this song on the P/A cassette includes piano, bass, drums and auxiliary percussion. It does lend itself well to being performed live on piano only, however. Just remember to keep it slow and pretty. If you do play it live, you could also eliminate the second verse for brevity.

As usual, even though the song is capable of existing for no other reason than the pleasure of singing or hearing it, it does have a bit of a lesson. It makes children aware that we are all blessed with different abilities. Hopefully, the lesson will make kids think twice before teasing others for their differences or perceived inadequacies, as well as remind them that they have something unique to offer, too. You may wish to use the song as a point of departure for discussing such issues.
