Think Outside The Box
by Tom & Lynn Crowell
"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." This famous quote perfectly connects to the message of this song: Sometimes the best solutions come from trying something unexpected and new. Creativity can go a long way in problem solving. Looking at a problem from several different angles and trying a new approach can often lead to innovation. This song encourages ingenuity so students will take creative risks, stay curious, and not be afraid of original, unusual ideas. You might begin by asking your students what it means to "think outside the box." Can they name inventions, discoveries, or creations that required someone to try something new? Velcro® was inspired by burrs sticking to clothing, sticky notes were created from a "failed" glue experiment, and even everyday things like popsicles and potato chips were invented accidentally! Creativity often starts with experimentation.
This bouncy and slightly quirky song sets the mood perfectly since ideas come easily when we're feeling energized. Encourage your students to maintain that energized feeling when singing. The "huh ho" part is meant to be silly and unexpected to get your blood pumping. It's a musical reminder that good ideas don't always arrive in serious ways! There is an optional part 2 for the vocals that is introduced early on in the song and continues throughout. We have an isolated recording of part 2 on the web site for teaching purposes.
Measure 14 introduces a soaring French horn. It only plays here and at the end of the song. Measure 14 is also where the hand claps enter. They are optional, but we think your students will love them!
