Ice Bucket
by Teresa Jennings
In honor of the frozen winter weather many of us "enjoy" during the months of January and February, we present "Ice Bucket." This hard rock piece is mostly a recorder feature using only the notes E, G, A, B, and C. However, to make it more challenging and interesting, we have layered in other instruments as well. These include buckets (head and side only), which can be added to or replaced with any non-pitched drums or containers. There is also an optional part for beginning ukulele and/or guitar playing C, G, and Ami chords.
While just playing along with the catchy rock groove would be reason enough to play this, we have added some extra fun in a couple of ways. First, the recorder players are invited to tap their heels (we suggest one heel per player) to the beat starting at the beginning and continuing throughout. Assuming they are sitting, this should be simple and natural. If they are standing and it feels awkward, don't do it. At bar 17, the ukulele and guitar may tap on the instrument bodies with their fingernails. This might be more challenging than it sounds because they have to keep the beat – no rushing! During this same section, there is a very cool unique synth voice that enters saying, "Ice in the bucket" on an A. We suspect this will be a favorite feature of the tune. It also joins in for the last measure.
