I'm Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover
adapted/arr. Karl Hitzemann
"I'm Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover" is a catchy song from 1927 written by Mort Dixon and Harry Woods. Dixon and Woods were both well-known songwriters from New York City's famed Tin Pan Alley, which was a collection of music publishers and songwriters that dominated popular music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. (Harry Woods also wrote the song, "When The Red, Red Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along." There is a marvelous arrangement of that song by Paul Jennings in Music K-8, Volume 32, Number 4, and also available as a Singles Reproducible Kit.)
Our arrangement of "I'm Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover" uses the original melody and lyrics. For a bit of added challenge, we composed a second part that complements the original melody. It's first sung the second time at bar 9 while the first melody is sung on "loo." The third time at bar 9, both melodies are sung together with both parts singing the lyrics. You could just do the song in unison and sing the lyrics every time through, but adding the second part really adds to the fun and excitement. Another possibility would be to just do part of the second vocal line. For example, you could have your singers only sing the "one, two, three, four, bow dote bow dee oh" lines each time they occur (bars 15 and 16, 31 and 32, and the second ending). And yet another option, have a soloist or small group sing part 2. In case it helps, we have isolated a part 2 rehearsal track for you and put it on our web site. This is definitely a song that calls for an exuberant, energetic, and over-the-top performance.
