Learning

by Teresa Jennings

Fiery. Energetic. Enthusiastic. These are the things we hope your students will feel when performing the song, "Learning." From the very beginning, the layers of drums (appropriately labeled "big drums" and "bigger drums" on the music) set the tone.

Learning is an exciting thing. There's every reason to sing out about it. Consider that in previous eras, some not so long ago, not everyone was even allowed to learn or had access to it. That's why we must continue to impress upon our young charges today the value and importance of knowledge, and never take it for granted.

We hope we are doing our part by providing music that can help with your efforts, starting with this passionate song. We have chosen to use it as our opener for the school year, and you could also use it that way either in your classroom or on a stage. It could be inspiration for activities and events, or a feature in a concert. It could even be a closing piece.

The lyrics and melody are actually not that difficult to learn and remember, plus they are repetitious. It's the energy that will be the challenge – and the attitude. It goes from solid intense confidence at the verse (measure 9), to a marvelous building anticipation at the bridge (measure 17), then explodes into the high energy of the chorus (measure 29). The dynamics toggle between forte and fortissimo, a subtle difference worth discussing. There are also accents to consider, which contribute to the rhythmic intent.

To make it build well and add more vocal fun, there is an optional second part. It enters at the pick-ups to the D.S. If you are able to use it, it will definitely add to the overall impact. If you need a little help, consider asking a few older students, teachers, staff, even family members to join in and help with this part. It's worth the effort. To help with the learning, you will find an isolated rehearsal track for part 2 on our web site. There is also an a cappella version of the two parts together for the last half of the song which might be useful for listening, learning, or inspiration. This is also available on our web site.

We are particularly pleased with the orchestral background on the Performance/Accompaniment recording. If you have a chance, play the instrumental version (track 16) for your students for listening purposes. Let them hear and possibly identify the many layers of brass, woodwinds, strings, piano, synthesizers, and of course, percussion going on. It's quite a ride.

An excellent excuse to dance!

Given the high energy and excitement of this tune, it seemed only right to have movement ideas available for it, too. Our choreographer, Melissa Schott, has given us some terrific ideas to employ, either as she presents them, or adapted however works best for you. On our web site, you will find her free video and a PDF of teaching notes.
