At The Zombie Food Truck

by Teresa Jennings

It seems that the popularity of zombie culture just won't die (groan), so we're compelled to do our part to contribute, um... artistically? Okay, now we're just being silly. But it's really a fun silly. Kids get to be zombies, acting out creepy (kid-friendly) bits if they are inspired. You will hear plenty of cliché spooky elements in this over-the-top song: pipe organ, wailing theremin, eerie strings, haunting piano, minor key, a possibly familiar underlying motif during the verse... (Anyone else remember the old "Worms Crawl In" song? Listen for it!) It's everything a hungry zombie could want.

To keep it accessible, we've made it all unison, except for the spoken parts. We do recommend that you instruct your singers to enunciate, especially at the verses so that the delicious lyrics can be understood. There are also opportunities to make general zombie-inspired noises here and there, all of which you can really milk. Or ignore. If you do use them, don't let them upstage the singing zombies.

During the last iteration of the chorus at measure 26, allow your more extroverted actors to shine in their solo deliveries. Choose a different zombie for each plea for "Brains!," or just have one or two do them all. As you can hear on the recording, we had quite the variety.

If you are able to use this piece in performance, even a virtual one, let your kids dress up accordingly. Also consider using prop "food" to make the performance even more, well, appetizing. Or not.
