Aliens In My Shoes

by David & Anne Ellsworth

Has this ever happened to you? Sometimes, when the music starts, your feet begin to tap and you just don't remember doing that. Before you know it, your legs go along and you're standing up, walking in rhythm to the beat of the tune. Now your bottom half is full-on dancing, but you are not doing it, you're not in control. You're just being dragged along with the beat… How is that happening?? Well, we've discovered the answer! Your feet have been infiltrated by nothing less than aliens. Aliens small enough to climb into your shoes undetected, gain control of your foot movement, and not care about the cramped and smelly environs. What else could it be?

Our out-of-this-world song tells the tale of the miniature stealth adventurers. We've reverse engineered the tune (because it, too, is out of control) and started with the chorus of the song, stating the obvious: "Aliens in my shoes." Your younger kids get to sing a story about what the aliens are doing there inside their shoes. The last note has them asking for help as the fun is over now and the creepy little dudes are still going. It's silly, quirky, repetitive fun for your children.

You can come up with some movements to teach, or invite a student or two to listen and invent their own actions. (Anne tells us that in her kindergarten class, one student's movements were particularly funny, so they paused to allow a complete demonstration which everyone then imitated with great satisfaction.) It's stellar fun and worth a try during music class, indoor recess, or as a brain break during whole group instruction to get the wiggles out.

Crafty aliens - To keep the silliness going, you might want to let your youngsters "make" their own aliens. Artist Kristyn Johnson has provided a template and video tutorial that you can get from our web site for free!
