Thank A Nurse

by John Riggio

Having had some experience with loved ones who needed nursing, we can tell you that it takes a special temperament and gifting to be a great nurse. Fortunately, we have met some of those wonderful folks. The dedication, compassion, caring, and ability to problem-solve when a patient is in need is paramount. These people are worthy of our appreciation.

The original idea behind this tune was to honor our nurses on National School Nurse Day, but you certainly don't have to wait to do it on just that day. It definitely works any time you want to show them, or rather sing them, some gratitude. (Note: If you do choose to use this song for National School Nurse Day, it might interest you to know that the holiday is scheduled around the birthday of Florence Nightingale – May 12th – one of the pioneers of modern nursing.)

How you choose to perform the song might depend on where you are. If your school has a school nurse (not all do, of course), then having the performance at school with the school nurse present would be lovely. Be sure to acknowledge and even spotlight her or him as your students sing. That said, the song could also be performed anywhere nurses work, such as a hospital or an assisted living facility.
