Whatcha Think About That?

by Teresa & Paul Jennings

This catchy tune is just bursting with joy and happy emotions! Perfect for spring or summer, but usable any time. And since it's in unison, it's a fun and easy way to get all of your students singing and swinging along with a lively jazz band. Just let them listen to the Performance/Accompaniment recording to hear our kids and players, and they'll catch on in no time.

Besides being uplifting and motivational, it's also a great opportunity to discuss poetic imagery and metaphors (if you want to get that carried away). You wouldn't really want the sun on your shoulder, much less the moon in your hat. Yet the idea sounds so delightful, we all seem to understand that it's another way of saying we feel good.

Speaking of feeling good, if you're inspired, you could have your students add a bit of movement to make it even more memorable, especially in a performance. Here are a few suggestions:

  • sun on my shoulder - tap shoulder
  • moon in my hat - tap head
  • world in my pocket - tap chest pocket
  • Whatcha think about that? - hands on hips
  • rain in a teacup - hold imaginary cup with pinky out
  • snow in my cap - tap head again
  • sky in my pocket - tap chest pocket
  • rainbows follow - sweep arms above head side to side
  • chase the clouds away - make "shoo" gesture above
  • stars don't just come out at night - point upward
  • shine for me all day - arms out to sides, hands open

Obviously, these are super simple gestures and can even be done on risers, which is always a plus. Feel free to change or adapt them any way you like.
