Out Of The Ordinary, We Are

by Teresa Jennings

The original intention of this soulful piece was for use with graduations or moving on ceremonies at the end of the year. But it doesn't specifically say that, so you could use it any time you want to bolster your students' self-confidence and belief in themselves and their abilities. As motivational pieces go, it's a little different, but very cool and fun to sing.

It's unison, which makes it more accessible for most classes. However, it does have a bit of musical nuance within that gives you a chance to work with your singers towards a show-off performance. Things like scoops, exacting pronunciations, glottals, dynamics, and cut-offs can transform a performance to a more satisfying accomplishment. Which, incidentally, is consistent with the message.
