Candlelight Vigil

by Teresa Jennings

While you may find this haunting and beautiful song appropriate for your Memorial Day concert, you will no doubt realize it has a universal message that could be applied in other circumstances as well. All too often in recent times we have seen images of people gathered at candlelight vigils – crying, remembering, sharing, and supporting each other in the wake of a tragedy or loss of some kind. Sometimes silent demonstrations, these vigils might also include music that soothes and comforts.

With a gentle folk style and expressive flugelhorn solo, this song helps to create a quiet and nurturing atmosphere in which to connect to each other. We suggest that it is first sung in unison, then when it repeats, let it go into a two-part round, though this is optional. The counterpoint with the two vocal lines and flugelhorn is quite lovely if you do use it as a round.
