I just put the words up, with no definition, as I have a saying, action, or song for the definition of each one. I admit to making them up, but they just help the students remember so much better.

For instance, for tempo I have them sing, to the tune of "I'm Late" from Alice In Wonderland:

It's fast, it's slow, it's tempo don't you know, cause music goes both fast and slow it's tempo don't you know!

And then they slide their hand sideways across the air in front of them and say, "Speed" (very cool of course). We snap to the beat as it increases in tempo through the ditty.

These are my beginning of the year words in the order I will introduce them:

Staff - will reinforce with the hand staff song
Octave - this is to the tune of the Applebee's commercial
Tempo - see above
Dynamics
Forte - will reinforce with "Forte Piano" (from Music K-8, Vol. 13, No. 1)
