I work at a school where concerts involve K-8 and participation is required. I let students know that participation in class is rated 0-10. Prior to our concert, I encountered those older male students who didn't want to contribute. (Either they don't think it is "cool" to sing, or they are trying to model unacceptable behavior for their peers.)
I recruited some of these students as stage crew to set up, draw curtains, make decorations, etc. They were still involved from the beginning of the whole process.
