What about color badges? The Red Cross swimming lessons used to use color badges - yellow, orange, red, maroon, blue, green, grey, white (they have 12 levels now), but kids may relate to badges just as well. Perhaps you could get colored dots from an office supply store and put them on the kids recorders when they've played the song from that level.
